Is viral-videos-will-save-the-music-biz the new syncs-will-save-the-music-biz? OK, no one's actually saying that, but FACEBOOK is reportedly offering "hundreds of millions of dollars" to labels and publishers to secure music rights to its users' videos. The initiative doesn't seem to be aimed at creating any new functionality but rather to pay for what its users have long been doing. BLOOMBERG sees it as "the latest windfall for a music industry surging from the growth of on-demand streaming services." Mailbox money, as songwriters call it. How much of it will actually go to songwriters? Asking for a few thousand friends. And how will this play out differently than Big Music's relationship with YOUTUBE, which pays just enough on music rights to make the whole industry hate it?... SONG EXPLODER and GOOGLE collaborated on this cool experiment to present song stems in a 3D audio and visual space online. Which is a sentence that would have made no sense to me a couple years ago. PHOENIX, NATALIA LAFOURCADE and PERFUME GENIUS are among the artists whose songs are available to explore...
